1. It’s often said that no one ever plans for a career in transportation: how did you get your start and what made you stay?
In 1998 I was working for a large A&E firm and two gentlemen from the transportation planning group asked to “borrow” me for a project. The project was the Major Investment Study for a high-capacity transit corridor (light rail) in Phoenix, Arizona. The public owner was the City of Phoenix and their Project Manager, Wulf Grote appreciated my efforts so much he asked that I become a permanent part of the team. Seeing a project of that magnitude evolve from a planning study, through design, then into construction and operations was incredible. I was fascinated by how interwoven transportation is with everything we do - I was hooked!
2. With pressure across multiple fronts, how do you go about reinventing yourself to ensure you can continue to provide the critical leadership your company – and community – depends on?
Early in my career, I was very focused on being what I believed I was supposed to be as a professional. I sought out examples and role models while tempering my own personality and natural tendancies. The greatest “reinvention” I’ve experienced is to accept myself for who I am and celebrate my differences as strengths rather than seeing them as weaknesses.
3. What are the three most important skills to master for success?
Communication, empathy, and creativity. Above all, know yourself and surround yourself with people who complement your skillset.
4. What is your greatest challenge as a professional in this industry?
Creating balance between home and work is the greatest challenge. My role requires wearing a lot of different hats. Everyday presents new challenges; working with our team internally, providing attention and care to each client, and constantly pursuing new opportunities. It’s important to make time for yourself and to celebrate the little successes along the way.
